Frampton’s energetic and scheming Mayor believes the investment and legacy of the Games will restore some vitality to the once-booming economy of the area. The two architects - Harry Jamb and Frederick Shaw - start out in practice together but after an acrimonious divorce compete furiously for work and for recognition.

They come head-to-head in the competition to design the buildings for the Olympic-style EuroGames, and in the shortlist for the coveted Frazer Prize. One of the heroes of the book is the citys chief planner, Ed Clutton, who sees the games as a way of bringing regeneration to the city, but he finds himself continually up against the Prince Charles-like figure of the Duke of Frampton, who dislikes all modern architecture. The design teams struggle to create great buildings and have to fend off critics like the Duke and the gay conservationist John Veduty, who would prefer to see the stadia designed in the traditional style. The kick-ass project manager Joe Porley wins praise for delivering the games on budget and on schedule, as does radical young architect Jonny Spon for his work with the local community. The lives of the architects unravel as they compete to design the best building for the games.

Their struggle reaches a dramatic climax at the spectacular opening ceremony of the EuroGames watched by millions around the world. The book chronicles the tangled relationships of the protagonists against the backdrop of the design and construction of the stadia and swimming complex for the EuroGames: the affair of Harrys wife Eleanor (wealthy daughter of a leading Italian furniture manufacturer) with the local Olympic hero, Martin Hester- Harrys own relationship with his PA- the close friendship between Jason Vent, the designer of the controversial logo for the games and Josh Stern the architect of the media centre- the drug-fuelled parties of Sid Dixon, the design-conscious property developer at the Abita property fair in the south of France- the relationship of Petronella, the artist daughter of the Duke of Frampton, and Amanda Stone, one of the countrys leading women architects.

All this is watched and reported on by the sexually voracious Rachael Dove, architectural correspondent of The Gazette.Intertwined into the story is a history of architecture and urban development over the past half century - the development of large council estates in the 60s and the destruction of the city centre by traffic engineers and urban motorways, the loss of Framptons steelwork and the move to a service economy and more recently the popularity of the central areas of the city for new residential development.
